F250 and F350 with campers

Post by terry1167 »

I love working on the Camper Specials and big Mitchell cabover campers.....my hobby (along with my son). I thought I'd share a couple of pics for fun. The 68 is a pic that I found with a 67 Mitchell camper on it. Behind it is a 66 F250 with a 67 Mitchell camper. The big 70 F350 crewcab was recently for sale in Denver and had a custom made 11' Mitchell camper on it since new. I thought about buying it but it went fast. :fr: The last pic is of a 72 F350 chassis cab XLT with Mitchell motorhome. We love looking at them for some odd reason.

Good morning Terry and Rich!

Terry, those photos are fantastic. Like Rich, I love that yellow crew-cab!!!

Rich, I'm definitely visually amused (and amusing)!!! The ZEP truck looks pretty level with the camper on--did it sag an inch or two when you let it down? And about how much does the camper weigh? And what's it like to drive with the camper on there?

Hi Rich,

That Aristocrat looks awesome on your 72 F250. Looks like it can handle the load without any trouble. I love the look and thanks for sharing the picture!

Hey Robroy, Terry thanks for the comments! The camper tag claims it weighs 2,500lbs empty. It definately sagged the truck a couple inches. Its kind of a test fit right now because I have differance overloads I want to put on but the stock overload spring helped alot. It really doesnt sag the pickup to bad. Driving with the camper is alot differant than i thought it would be. I was expecting a super top heavy rig since the truck sits up higher than a 4x2, and i was also expectecting it to make the truck sluggish. And its not. Once I got out of Aromas and kinda got a feel for it it was really a breeze, the ride is a heck of alot smoother. Ive been driving it around Santa Cruz!

Hey Rich,
2500# is a pretty good load. I can't recall if your F250 is a camper special or if they made them in the 4x4 but Ford really was the king of big slide-in campers during the 70's. Depending upon the overloads, they really can smooth out the ride. My 90 F250 with overloads absolutely rides like it's on square wheels but when I put the big 11'3" Lance camper (about 2,900# empty) it smooths out considerably. My dad had a 76 F250 4x4 that he bought brand new and he had a Mitchell slide in camper on it and I can remember driving it and it did feel a little top heavy because it sat up so high.
Well, have fun cruising around Santa Cruz with your rig!

Hey Terry, My pickup isnt a camper special. I think your right I dont know if they made a 4x4 CS or not. I do know my pickup has the higher gvwr 7,100 I think for a 4x4. Right now my factory overload is just a single spring on top of my normal stack. I have some overlaods off a f350 that are a five leaf stack I think im going to put on. that is a nice looking lance. You got any interior shots of your mitchell campers? Id love to see the layout.

The overloads from the F350 will really stiffen up the ride and frame and will definitely help carry the load.

Here's a few pics of the interior of my 79 11' Mitchell. It's all original and in outstanding condition.
