Make your own: Wheel bearing race installers

Post by 72BahamaBlue »

Many years ago a mechanic taught me this;
After removing the wheel-bearing races, sand the outer circumference on a disc sander until it's a slip fit into the hub.
These took about 20 rotations with gentle pressure against the sander until it would slip into the hub with a little play.
Use the thicker end of the ring for hammering, some easy tapping and drive them in. Works really well!

Be sure and sand it. When I was young and dumb I did this and it was really hard to get out.

this is a great idea. I use a wheel bearing race to drive in the big 9864s seals works like a champ!

No need to grind.... use a cut-off wheel and cut a slot through one side of the race.

That's a damned good point there HIO!!!! I personally use a brass drift 90% of the time, but will try this for those times where the final amount to drive it seems a bear to get the drift on the darn race!
