Are my garage walls meant for hanging things on (photo)?

Postby robroy on Mon Aug 31, 2009 12:50 am

Hi!

When I moved in to this house I noticed that about half of the wall space in the garage has this surface on it:

Image

At first I thought somebody had just recycled Jason's hokey mask, but then I started to think--maybe these holes are meant for some kind of hook to attach to!  Maybe a hook that you can use to hang stuff on!

Is this true?  Is this some kind of standard stuff-hanging wall material?  And do they sell hooks for this at the hardware store or what?

Thanks very much!

Thanks for replying Flatblack!

*PEGBOARD*!  Now that I hear the word I think I've heard of that before, but never encountered it.  So pegboard is awesome stuff huh?

I'll ask for the pegboard hooks next time I'm at the store and see what it's all about.  I like the idea of hanging all kinds of things up.

definately do, and theres more than just regular old hooks too, some are made so you can insert screwdrivers, some to hold hammers, some big ones for extension cords, definately a life saver... the best thing i love about them is that if your wall looks empty.... well its an excuse to buy more tools :D

When you're ready to use ALL of your wall space check out the Gladiator Garageworks stuff at lowes or sears.  GREAT organizational system. I have it in my Garage a.k.a.  Man Cave.

Hey Fordman, Patrick, Flatblack, and Cep62, thanks for replying!

Yes maybe you're right!  I remember the first time I saw soft-core pornography pinned to the wall in an auto shop I was amazed that they were bold enough to do that, especially since they probably had female customers from time to time!  But I guess that's a classic element of many garages.

Ah-ah, thanks!  I'll look at everything they've got.  As for buying more tools, I don't think I could increase the rate I buy them at now; it seems like I'm always needing some new tool, and good tools aren't cheap!

Gosh I looked at their web site and that stuff really is space-age.  That's pretty neat.  If I owned the place I live in I might put that kind of wall up!  But I'm renting for the time being so I don't want to invest much in the house itself.

Thanks for this tip!  I'll be careful to measure the spaces between the holes before going shopping; I think they're 1/4" but I'll check to make sure.

Thanks for all the excellent replies!!!

A trip to OSH yielded several really confused employees--I guess Pegboard is a little old fashioned or something, or maybe their employees just weren't very experienced.  Finally after several of them gave up, I wandered through the store until I found the hooks myself!  They were abundant and cheap, but made in China.  Oh well.

They sure work nicely!  And they're surprisingly strong once inserted.  I put a few things on the walls to test 'em out.

Thanks very much for the great advice!

Those are the simple hooks. Go to Walmart and you can buy packs of specialty hooks. Lowes also carries them.

The Gladiator Garageworks is a great system. When I win the lottery I am going to redo my garage in that system. Lowe's has a good selection of hooks for pegboard.

It's gradually expanding--this pegboard stuff is very convenient!
