AM Radio Speaker 68 F250

Postby jimilivz » Fri Jan 27, 2017 5:21 am

Looking to return my truck to stock with the original am radio set-up. All I need is a working, original Ford speaker from a 67-72. Must have an intact connector. This type uses a mounting bracket to hold it in place under the dash speaker grille. Thanks.

You can go with an aftermarket one up under the dash. It very close to original and can be attached up there with a little bit of adjusting.

If you have a link to a specific speaker you are referring to, that would be a great help. The previous poster's link is dead.

check out the ones at Autozone, Oreilley's etc.
Do you have the old speaker frame to compare? It's a simple oval speaker, but of the size the original was.
Like;

or maybe it's the 6" one;

When I was putting mine in I had the dash off, changing to a better dash, and everything was cleared out. I got the same size as OEM, and zip tied it up there under the dash through the stock holes. Sounded pretty good, probably pretty close to what the original was. good luck, its a worthwhile thing to do.

Thanks for the reply. Not looking to do a zip tie set-up. I was hoping someone had an original ford speaker, a takeoff, that they would be willing to let go of. I have the support bracket that holds it up in place under the speaker grille, so it doesn't use any screws or anything else. Since the PO had ditched the original radio in favor of a billy bob stereo, I'm not sure of the actual size either. The Ford parts catalog shows several sizes: 4X8, 5X7, all 8 ohm. I am even so picky as to want the original two wire connector.

I have felt your pain. I have been through several original ones and found more bad ones than good ones. I finally found one that works good and isn't torn. You just have to keep looking. Most of the ones in junk yards are either missing or torn up.

Well, I found an excellent replacement for the unobtanium original Ford speaker. Its sold by S&M Electro Tech out of Blaine, MN. It is the 6X9 oval. All I had to do is fabricate a decent connector. $49.95 plus shipping to you. I never heard the original speaker, but for a mono set-up, this one "rocks".

Cool. So did the holes match up with the dash holes with that speaker?

Well on my 68, the speaker doesn't use screws or holes to hold the speaker in place. It uses a stamped steel bracket that has a tab on one end and a screw hole on the other that have places in the metal dash where they attach. So any replacement speaker must have the right depth, including the magnet, in order to retain the bracket mounting arrangement. This one does. It's a bit bigger speaker than the original (6X9 vs 5X7), but in my truck, there is plenty of room (no a/c). The screw holes on the new speaker aren't used. BTW, make sure you ask for the dust screen to be put on your speaker when you place the order.

I'm trying to find the best replacement radio and speaker set up to fit stock in my 1968 f100 without cutting the metal tabs off or messing with the speaker support in the dash.
What would be a good reasonably priced combo for this?

I have a 64 thunderbird and i believe the rear speaker works on my truck. I would need to go check the part number to make sure its not the front. I order my thunderbird parts through tbird nest. I was surprised it worked.

I think this is what originally came in the dash.
