Most '60s Ford's have no VIN stamping that matches the block/heads/etc to the chassis. Due to the way Ford put the engine code in the serial number, the whole "numbers-matching" concern so vital to GM cars is relatively unimportant to Ford fans, as a quick scan of the 5th digit of the serial number will indicate what engine a particular vehicle came with from the factory. In 1968, Ford started the practice of partial VIN stamping on some cars, which was required by Federal law in January 1968 as part of Title 18 (it was an anti-theft clause). Even lowly 6-cylinder Mustangs have matching sequential numbers on the engine, transmission, body and VIN tag. But prior to the '68 model year only special high performance cars usually got a serialized engine.
